I had viewed the original Fullmetal Alchemist TV series a few years ago, and had taken up reading the manga since then. Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood is a retelling, much closer to the manga's version of the story. The first 14-15 episodes are almost identical to the original TV series, to the point where I was wondering if they didn't just edit the old film.

The script was almost identical, as was the backgrounds and character designs. But then the plot splits off, and becomes something completely unlike the old show. If you have seen the original TV series, Brotherhood is definitely still worth watching. Most of the Japanese voice actors have taken on their roles again, which was a plus for me.

They are a big part of the reason I wanted to see the series subtitled rather than dubbed. As far as I could tell, the quality of the translation was good, and I had no problem following along reading at a comfortable pace with the voices. As of the time of this review, only the first half of the series is available Subtitled Instantly, so hopefully Amazon will offer the second half soon! Note: for some reason the dubbed version of season 1 includes more episodes, and I have no idea why. The DVD set for season 1 has the same number of episodes as this subtitled instant view. Hopefully that is just a sign that Amazon is slowly rolling out the second season.

Brothers Edward and Alphonse Elric search for the Philsopher’s Stone, hoping to restore their bodies, which were lost when they attempted to use their alchemy skills to resurrect their deceased mother.
