Came across this interesting blog post on the sistemas - The write up states, 'The pistols were to possess a separate serial number series, with the first ten thousand built by Colt in Argentina for the Argentine Army. Colt equipment and employees were relocated and the manufacturing began. From 1927 to 1933 ten thousand pistols, known to collectors as Hartford Argentine Army Models were produced. The serial numbers range from 1 to 10,000.'
Enter the serial number, without spaces or dashes, to search the database. If multiple models appear for your serial number simply match the date with the. There were only 10,000 of these pistols made by Colt for the Argentine Army (Ejercito Argentino) under contract in 1927.
I bolded and underlined the interesting part. I had been under the impression that the 1st 10,000 were built in the U.S. Which is correct? UPDATE: See post #13 for the answer; the SNs 1-10000 were manufactured by Colt in Hartford, CT. __________________ Avoid the temptation to replace everything on your brand-new 1911 just to make it 'better'. You may spend a lot of money fixing things that weren't broken to begin with. Shoot at least 500 rounds through it first, then decide what you don't like and want to improve. Regarding vintage 1911s, pre-1970 pistols are highly collectible in original, unaltered condition and should NEVER be refinished or modified as it completely ruins their monetary value.
Lisik: is there a marking on the chamber? If the answer is affirmative, is the marking composed by two perpendicular oval shapes? Please let me know. There is a problem with statement about the 'sistema pistols'.
Ten thousand pistols were indeed made by Colt in Hartford, CT, between 1927 and 1928. These pistols bear s/n 1 to 10000 and are known as Colt Modelo 1927, or more properly Colt Modelo Argentino 1927. At that time the Argentineans also acquired from Colt the licence for local manufacturing, but Argentineans purchased a complete factory from the German company Fritz Werner. Fritz Werner also supplied the tools, gauges and developed the manufacturing process using the equipment they provided for the manufacturing of the Modelo 1927 pistols. The pistols made in Argentina are known as the Sistema Colt.
Manufacture in Argentina began in 1945 and ended in 1966. Argentine made pistols bear serial numbers in the 94 range. Everything I hear about the Sistemas is they made a very good high quality firearm that rivaled the colts. A good solid piece. Does anyone know if in 1945 they started out great and in the years toward 1966 their quality got better or worse or stayed the same,or did they start out with just ok and then get better as they perfected the process?
What I'm trying to say is most manufactures start out with teething pains and evolve to a VG to Great firearm and then quality stats to suffer as they wined down? Is there any big diff in quality between (1945-49) guns and (1950's) guns and (1960's) guns or are they consistent throughout? Where their any years better than any others?
